Florence was originally situated on the right
bank of the Arno only, but extended at an early
period in the middle ages to the opposite bank.
The Ponte Sta. Trinita was erected in 1252 and
rebuilt in 1567 by Bartolomeo Ammanati, restored
and widened in 1867. It is adorned with allegorical
statues of the seasons.
