The illustration shows the Drum Horse of the 12th Lancers.
The Drummer is in full dress and the regimental drum banner carries the regimental device of the Prince of Wales's plume and battle honours.
The regiment was, at the time the photograph was taken, known as The 12th (Prince of Wale's Royal) Lancers which had originally been raised in 1715 as Brigadier-General Bowle's Regiment of Dragoons.
It carried the battle honours of Egypt, Peninsula, Waterloo, South Africa 1851-2-3, Sevastopol and Central India on its Banner.
